Visitor Visa (and Visitor Records) in Canada

Many individuals from around the world are interested in visiting Canada on a temporary basis. Canada requires visitors to apply for a visitor visa if they are not from an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) approved country. A link to a list of ETA approved countries is enclosed below.

In order to visit Canada from a non-ETA country on a temporary basis, an individual may submit an application for a Canadian Visitor Visa. Processing times for a Canadian Visitor Visa varies depending on the circumstances of the particular application and the volume of files being processed in the relevant Visa Office.

A Canadian Visitor Visa does not permit an individual to work in Canada. Typically, most applicants will require a separate application in order to work in Canada unless the relevant exemptions are applicable in the applicant’s circumstances.

Upon receiving a Visitor Visa, it is important to ensure that your immigration status in Canada is valid throughout the duration of your stay in Canada. It is also important to ensure that you do not remain in Canada beyond a period of authorization without regularizing your status. If you have been granted a Visitor Visa and would like to remain in Canada beyond the expiration date of the approved initial Visitor Visa, you must apply for an extension of your Visitor Visa (this is also referred to as a Visitor Record.)
